![]() Tao Okamoto as Mariko is much more the damsel in distress, and her performance isn’t as memorable as the others. What’s also interesting about The Wolverine is the strong female characters, particularly Famke Janssen as Jean Gray and the outstanding Rila Fukushima as Yukio. Here he is able to mine that talent and bring some real empathy to a role that in different hands might have been just another superhero caricature. He is a movie star, but he has also proven himself as an actor in movies like Les Miserables. What fueled its success with audiences are the compelling story and strong performances, and these are indisputably what Hollywood blockbusters need to resonate with the movie-going public. The movie grossed over $410 million worldwide at the box office. Hollywood might consider The Wolverine to be a case study in how it can survive an uncertain future. The Wolverine: A case study for Hollywood survival After a while, those movies start to look alike, and thoughtful storytelling seems to fall by the wayside. Yet Hollywood risks audiences growing complacent. Sequels are Hollywood’s bread and butter. It’s hard to believe, but Hollywood needs saving, and it’s relying on superheroes to do the job. Now studios are making far fewer films, and the failure of several big movies could mean the end of a studio. These included specialty art house films, mid-budget romantic comedies and dramas, and more. Two decades ago, these films were what held the studio up if a movie did well, but back then studios also had a much more diverse portfolio, an array of smaller films to round out a studio’s yearly releases. Their profit margin is relying solely on what used to be termed “tent pole films,” the big blockbusters. The Hollywood studios are operating under a model that movie icons Steven Spielberg and George Lucas have said is not sustainable. More specifically, the Hollywood studios are fighting for survival. It may not seem like it from the hundreds of millions pumped into bloated summer blockbuster budgets, but Hollywood is fighting for its survival.
